Gyms in Tokyo

Major chain gyms like Gold’s Gym, Anytime Fitness and Tipness have multiple locations in the Tokyo area. Please see [Gyms for the short-term visitor to Japan – General Information] for information about these gyms.

Please also read my guide to Japanese Gym etiquette, as that will apply to most of these gyms.

Below I have compiled information on other gyms specific to the Tokyo area. View all gyms in a single map.

  • Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium [public gym]  (Link to website [English])
    • Location: Sendagaya, Shibuya-Ku, Tokyo   [Map]
    • Prices for short-term visitors: 600 yen for 2.5 hours / 6,000 yen (month)
    • Opening hours: 9:00 – 23:00 (Mon-Fri), 9:00 – 22:00 (Sat), 9:00 – 21:00 (Sunday and Public holidays)
    • Facilities: (Quoted from the website) The gymnasium contains two training rooms organized by purpose. Training room A contains a diverse set of aerobic exercise and weight training machines including 13 treadmills, 23 exercise bikes. Training room B is a free weights area, fully equipped with 3 bench presses, 2 squat racks, barbells, dumbbells, and large-sized machines like the Smith machine.
    • Notes: There could be a wait to use the gym during peak night time hours and weekends.
  • Minato City Sports Center [public gym]   (Link to website [English])
    • Location: Shibaura, Minato-Ku, Tokyo   [Map]
    • Price for short-term visitors: 800 yen (daily) [500 yen for resident, worker or student in Minato City]
    • Facilities: 44 cardio machines, 24 weight stack machines, 5 bodyweight machines, 3 free weight machines, 3 bench press, 1-30kg dumbbells. Apparently has a power rack for squatting.
    • Notes: No registration necessary for non-residents; just show up and start training.  Make sure you observe the standard rules (Read: Japanese gym etiquette)
    • Pool use fees are included in the general fee. The pool may only be used for 2 hours at a time once daily.
  • Shinjuku Sports Center [public gym]   (Link to website [Japanese])
    • Location: Okubo, Shinjuku-Ku, Tokyo    [Map]
    • Price for short-term visitors: 400 yen (day) [600 yen for use of the gym+pool]
    • Facilities: 12x30m fitness room with a small amount of free weights. Has a basic squat rack and bench at least.
    • Notes: No registration necessary for non-residents; just show up and start training.
  • Toshima Ikebukuro Sports Center [public gym]   (Link to website [Japanese])
    • Location: Ikebukuro, Toshima-Ku, Tokyo    [Map]
    • Price for short-term visitors: 400 yen (2 hours) + 200 yen for each additional houe
